Scientists from The University of California, Berkeley, have genetically engineered bacteria capable of efficiently breaking down plastic waste, offering a potential solution to our growing dilemma. By enhancing the bacteria's plastic-digesting abilities, researchers aim to turn the commonly used plastic, PET, into useful chemicals and products, such as adhesives, insulators and nylon. While a breakthrough that offers potential ways to mitigate plastic pollution, the process is challenging and there is much more work to be done - simply generating less plastic waste remains one of the best approaches.
