Ocado, an online supermarket in the UK, is piloting a refillable packaging scheme for everyday items like pasta, rice, and detergent. Customers receive pre-filled reusable containers with their orders and return empty ones to the driver for cleaning and refilling. This initiative aims to reduce single-use plastic waste, with Ocado claiming that if every UK household reused just one item weekly, it could eliminate over 1.4 billion single-use packaging items annually. While other retailers have experimented with refill options, many have struggled due to added costs. Ocado's trial marks the first time an online supermarket has offered refillable packaging directly to customers' homes.
