Twelve months after a 10-cent fee on plastic bags was introduced, Colorado has significantly reduced usage according to the Boulder Recycling Center - approximately 1.5 billion fewer bags were used across the state in 2023. The dramatic reduction demonstrates the effectiveness of using financial incentives to encourage environmentally conscious behavior. Even greater reductions in useage are expected in 2024 as more business phase out the use of single-use plastic bags. While some initial resistance occurred, the program proves that small local changes can have substantial environmental benefits.
