Some plastic toys stay in the family for subsequent generations - but most are simply thrown away. France's Environment and Energy Management Agency estimates that nearly 100,000 tons of Christmas toys are thrown away every year.  A new waste-reduction law focuses primarily on toy reuse - through donation or resale.  The law also encourages recycling but plastics in toys face the usual technical recycling challenges, and more consumer education and more eco friendly design is needed. Plant-based plastic components, the increasing use of wood in toys and the use of more kid friendly water-based paints, are changes that are slowly making their mark in an otherwise plastic-dominated industry.
