Plastic recycling is both ineffective and harmful according to a new study. The petrochemical industry created the recycling symbol scam in the 1980s to divert attention awat from the volume of waste that was actually being created. Meanwhile, the minimal amount of plastic recycling that does take place is done at facilities that often facilitate the release of microplastics - toxins that are now found in every human organ and linked to health issues. The study questions the recycling industry's effectiveness and suggests focusing on reducing plastic production and consumption while criticizing the lack of comprehensive research on microplastics.
